Adidas was founded in Herzogenaurach, Germany in 1949. The company’s founder, Adolf “Adi” Dassler, used his own name to create the name “Adidas”; he also registered the brand’s three-stripe logo that year. In its early years Adidas concentrated on making high-performance footwear for football players. It later branched out to providing shoes and equipment for other sports, and by the 1980s its products were also highly popular as streetwear. Adidas became the first sneaker to be mentioned in a hip-hop song with the release of Run DMC’s “My Adidas” in 1986; this was a ground-breaking event in the crossover between sportswear brands and popular music. In addition to footwear created specifically for professional and amateur athletes, Adidas currently offers sports-inspired streetwear and footwear. Some limited edition designs are even created in collaboration with fashion designers. The Adidas personal care brand has released over 60 fragrances, as well as scented body products, and is currently owned by beauty giant Coty, Inc. Its fragrances have names that reflect the company’s history as a pioneer of athletics wear, including Action, Move, Team Force, Adventure and Champions League. They are usually fresh and clean-smelling, geared towards men and women with active lifestyles.
